This morning, ALDI Australia was crowned 2018 Retail Employer of the Year at the Australian Retailers Association Australian Retail Awards for the 2nd year running. It’s a win that means a lot to us because it recognises the importance we place on our people.
To be in the running, we had to demonstrate a strong track record across a range of areas, including staff education, training and development, internal communication, community support programs and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). We were able to satisfy these criteria thanks, in large part, to the work of our in-house training and development team, ALDI Academy.
Not only do our employees enjoy competitive remuneration, excellent work-life balance, and high degrees of responsibility, they’re also given every opportunity to grow and develop, both professionally and personally.
The emphasis we place on training and continuous improvement is one of the reasons that people really value working at ALDI. The ALDI Academy team work predominantly in the people space including recruitment, performance and learning and development across all areas of ALDI Australia. Whether it’s leadership training for our management teams, training our warehouse staff in receiving procedures or providing operational equipment training for the people running our stores, the team collaborate with subject matter experts inside and outside the business to develop solutions that allow our people to thrive in any role.
The focus we have on our people starts at the very beginning, when employees commence their respective roles. No matter what department a new employee is entering, they’ll be made to feel welcome with an introduction on ALDI’s history and corporate values via the ALDI Academy platform. Employees then undertake role-based learning pathways designed to help them succeed.
At ALDI, we strive to maintain a workplace culture where people are encouraged to reach their full potential, in whatever role they choose to pursue. We’ve had Store Assistants move into management positions, Customer Service employees transition to Quality Assurance roles and Warehouse staff move into our head office. There’s no denying that it’s a different approach, but it’s one that’s working for us.
By treating our people with respect, offering fair working conditions, and providing opportunities for professional and personal development, we’ve become an employer that Australians really want to work for.
